Weights and Marketplaces from the Bronze Age to the Early Modern Period

How can we identify weights in archaeological contexts? What economic changes did the use of such objects entail? And were marketplaces the usual space in which these metrological tools were used? These are some of the questions explored during two workshops (in Munich in 2016 and in Göttingen in 2017). The volume "Weights and marketplaces" contains 21 contributions. The first part addresses the problem of identifying and using early weights from the Chalcolithic/Bronze Age in Western Asia to the Early Middle Ages in Northern Europe. The second part of the volume discusses the phenomenology of marketplaces from the Bronze Age to modern times within a global framework. Both workshops were financially funded by the ERC-2014-CoG project 'WEIGHTANDVALUE': Weight metrology and its economic and social impact on Bronze Age Europe, West and South Asia' [Grant no. 648055]. Results of the project and related research will be published in the new series 'Weight & Value'.
